Pizza in Kigali — every wood-fired oven, every Italian register

Kigali takes its pizza more seriously than it used to. The wood-fired oven has become a credential; the dough discipline has caught up; the basil grows nearby. Six pizzerias worth ordering from, plus the two restaurants where pizza happens to be the standout dish.

Pizza arrived in Kigali via the hotel restaurant. For most of the 2000s, the only way to get a wood-fired pizza in the country was at a four-star kitchen with an Italian consulting chef. Today there are at least six pizzerias in Kigali running their own ovens, several of them with proper Neapolitan dough discipline, all of them defensible against the equivalent in Nairobi or Kampala. The city's pizza scene has caught up to the city's restaurant ambition, and it's still improving.

Six pizzerias and two restaurants where pizza is the standout — sorted by what you'd actually use them for.

The benchmarks

Sole Luna — Restaurants in Gisimenti, Kigali
RestaurantsGisimenti

Sole Luna

4.31,404 reviews

1,404 reviews, 4.3 stars. Most-cited pizza in Kigali by reviewer-volume. Wood-fired, generous portions, the outdoor seating overlooks the Gisimenti slope. The pizza is what reviewers consistently single out even when the rest of the menu varies.

Lavana — Restaurants in Kimihurura, Kigali
RestaurantsKimihurura

Lavana

4.4632 reviews

632 reviews, 4.4 stars. The Kimihurura institution. Wood-fired, broader Italian menu beyond pizza, but the pizza section is the order most regulars return for. The dough is the closest in the city to Neapolitan-tradition discipline.

Specialist pizzerias

RestaurantsKacyiru Sud

Fire & Stone Pizza Company

4.796 reviews

96 reviews, 4.7 stars. Pizza-first menu, smaller room, the newest of the serious pizzerias and the one watch-this signal in our data. The dough is good; the toppings are restrained.

Pizza Kwanza — Restaurants in Nyarutarama, Kigali
RestaurantsNyarutarama

Pizza Kwanza

5.042 reviews

42 reviews, five stars. Smaller scale, Nyarutarama. Every review is five stars. Worth knowing about as it scales.

RestaurantsNyarutarama

Mama Pizzalo

4.239 reviews

39 reviews, 4.2 stars. Nyarutarama family-run. Friendly, well-priced, more casual register than the wood-fired places. The Tuesday-night pizza-with-the-family default.

RestaurantsGacuriro

Masters Pizza

3.8249 reviews

249 reviews, 3.8 stars. Gacuriro. The volume option — larger ovens, broader delivery footprint, less precise on the dough discipline. Useful for the group order on a Friday night.

Where pizza isn't the main thing but is the order

The Hut Restaurant and Boutique Hotel

Gisimenti garden lounge. Multi-cuisine menu, but the wood-fired oven works overtime. Worth knowing for the long-weekend lunch.

Heaven Restaurant & Boutique Hotel — Restaurants in Kiyovu, Kigali

Heaven Restaurant & Boutique Hotel

4.3732 reviews

Kiyovu. Premium menu, pizza is the lunchtime favourite. Better for the larger group with mixed preferences.

What good pizza in Kigali looks like in 2026

Three things to notice across the wood-fired set:

  1. Crust under-baked is the failure mode. Kigali's altitude (1,500m) plays with dough hydration; the pizzerias that get this right have invested in the calibration. Sole Luna and Lavana both work the dough longer than the average; Fire & Stone explicitly references the altitude in their tasting notes.
  2. Toppings are increasingly local. Tomato sauce from local San Marzano-style cultivars; basil grown within an hour of the city; mozzarella from a Rwandan producer that ramped up in the last three years. The supply chain is real.
  3. The price gap is wide. A serious wood-fired pizza at Sole Luna or Lavana runs 14,000-22,000 RWF. The volume options (Masters, Mama Pizzalo) come in at 8,000-13,000 RWF. The difference is genuine — though both bands have their reasons to exist.

By neighbourhood

  • Gisimenti: Sole Luna (the benchmark), The Hut (the side-order register).
  • Kimihurura: Lavana (the institution).
  • Kacyiru Sud: Fire & Stone (the new pretender, in a good way).
  • Nyarutarama: Pizza Kwanza, Mama Pizzalo (both family-scaled).
  • Gacuriro: Masters (the volume option).
  • Kiyovu: Heaven Restaurant (hotel kitchen, premium).

Practical things

  • Booking. Sole Luna and Lavana on Fridays and Saturdays — yes. Fire & Stone is reservation-only some nights. The rest accept walk-ins.
  • Delivery. Almost all of these now offer WhatsApp ordering with home delivery. Sole Luna and Lavana run their own delivery teams; the others use third-party riders.
  • Sharing. Sole Luna and Lavana plates feed two comfortably. The smaller pizzerias' portions are single-person.
  • Wine. Lavana and Heaven have the most considered Italian lists. Sole Luna has a competent list at fair prices. The casual pizzerias serve mostly beer.
