Visiting Rwanda from Uganda — the complete 2026 guide

Ugandan passport, EAC freedom of movement, road crossing at Gatuna or Cyanika, the Kampala-Kigali flight option, and the practical things Kampala-based travellers should know about Kigali — including what's *different* despite the shared EAC framework.

Of every cross-border trip into Rwanda, Uganda's is the most-flexible. Visa-free entry on the Ugandan passport, road crossings at Gatuna and Cyanika that take about 9 hours by bus from Kampala, daily 1-hour flights from Entebbe, free movement under the EAC framework, and a Kampala-Kigali professional corridor active enough that most weekday Entebbe flights are full. This is the complete 2026 guide.

Visa — none required

Ugandan passport holders enter Rwanda visa-free under EAC arrangements. Show your passport at the border or airport; get a six-month stamp; you're in. No fees, no application. National ID also accepted for short visits but bring the passport to be safe.

  • Visa cost: Free
  • Validity on arrival: 6 months (EAC nationals)
  • Required documents: Valid Ugandan passport or national ID for short stays
  • Yellow fever: Not required from Uganda

Getting to Kigali

  1. Fly Entebbe (EBB) to Kigali (KGL). RwandAir and Uganda Airlines run multiple daily direct flights. 1 hour 5 minutes. Round-trip economy typically UGX 850,000-1,800,000. Book 2-4 weeks ahead.
  2. Bus from Kampala via Gatuna. Trinity, Volcano, Modern Coast and a handful of Ugandan operators run the route. 8-10 hours total. UGX 70,000-120,000 one-way. Overnight buses leave Kampala around 6 PM, arrive Kigali around 4-5 AM. The road crossing at Gatuna is the main one; Cyanika is an alternate.
  3. Private car/driver. Around UGX 500,000-800,000 one-way for a private driver. Useful for Ugandan businesses that move equipment.

Border crossings (road) are straightforward — Rwandan immigration at Gatuna typically takes 15-30 minutes. Bring your passport (national ID acceptable but passport preferred for road crossings). The Rwanda border is now One Stop Border Post, so you clear both countries at the same building.

Currency and money

Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 0.35 RWF per Ugandan Shilling (UGX 1,000 = ~350 RWF). EAC mobile money interoperability is improving but still imperfect — bring USD cash for the airport exchange or use a Ugandan Visa/Mastercard at Kigali ATMs. Most Ugandan-bank cards work at Bank of Kigali, Equity, and KCB ATMs.

What Ugandans notice about Kigali

  1. It's noticeably cleaner. Rwanda's plastic-bag ban and Umuganda community-cleaning programme keep Kigali visibly cleaner than Kampala. The contrast is part of the trip for most Ugandan visitors.
  2. Traffic is gentler. Kampala's traffic-and-boda density is famous. Kigali's traffic is calmer, the moto-taxis are quieter and helmeted, and the streets have actual sidewalks.
  3. English-French bilingualism is the working environment. English works universally for business; French is still common with older Rwandans. Luganda doesn't carry in Kigali; Swahili sometimes works.
  4. The pace is gentler. Working lunches are shorter; meetings start more on time; bars close earlier. Most Kampala-based visitors find this restorative for a 3-day trip.
  5. Less night noise. Kigali doesn't have Kampala's bar density or late-night intensity. Friday nights are real but quieter overall.

A 4-day Kampala-to-Kigali itinerary

  • Day 1: Morning flight or arrive evening if travelling by bus. Light dinner, early night.
  • Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial in the morning. Lunch at Nature Kigali. Afternoon in the Kisimenti retail district. Dinner at The Hut Restaurant.
  • Day 3: Working morning at Question Coffee Gishushu (the upstairs is the working-floor). Meet whoever you came to meet for lunch at Khana Khazana or Sole Luna. Afternoon: Inema Arts Center or Niyo Arts Center. Dinner at Arabic Palace.
  • Day 4: Late breakfast at Brioche or Slice & Cakes. Souvenirs at Caplaki Crafts Village. Afternoon flight or evening bus home.

Practical things

  • Plug type: Type C/J, 230V — same as Uganda. Your Ugandan chargers work directly.
  • Time zone: Same as Uganda (CAT, UTC+2). No adjustment.
  • SIM cards: MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda. Roaming with MTN Uganda works but is expensive. Local SIM 5,000-15,000 RWF.
  • EAC tourist visa option: If you'll travel back to Uganda through Kenya within 90 days, the East African Tourist Visa (USD 100) is worth considering. For a pure Uganda-Rwanda-Uganda trip, no visa needed.
