Visiting Rwanda from Burundi — the complete 2026 guide

Burundi-Rwanda is one of East Africa's shortest cross-border trips. Visa-free under the EAC framework, road crossings at Kanyaru and Akanyaru that take 5-6 hours by bus from Bujumbura, and a small but established Burundian community in Kigali. This is the complete 2026 guide.

Visa — none required

Burundian passport holders enter Rwanda visa-free under EAC arrangements. Six-month stamp on arrival, no fee. Passport preferred for the road crossing; national ID accepted for short stays.

Getting to Kigali

  1. Bus from Bujumbura via Kanyaru border. Several operators run the route. 5-6 hours total. BIF 25,000-45,000 one-way. Most-used option.
  2. Bus via Akanyaru border (alternative crossing). Slightly longer but useful when Kanyaru queues are heavy.
  3. Fly Bujumbura (BJM) → Kigali (KGL). RwandAir runs limited direct flights. ~1 hour. Useful when speed matters; book ahead.
  4. Private car/driver. ~4-5 hours by good car. Worth it for the right group or cargo.

Border at Kanyaru is straightforward — typically 20-40 minutes to clear immigration. The road from the border to Kigali is paved and runs through the southern highlands.

Currency and money

Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Rough cross-rate: roughly 0.40 RWF per Burundian Franc (BIF 1,000 = ~400 RWF). Burundian-bank cards have limited international acceptance in Kigali — bring USD cash and convert at the airport or border. Card payment limited; cash + MoMo is the working approach.

Practical things

  • Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. Same as Burundi.
  • Time zone: Same as Burundi (CAT, UTC+2). No adjustment.
  • Language: Kinyarwanda and Kirundi are mutually intelligible — Burundian visitors find conversation easier than most. French still common in Kigali; English the working business language.
  • SIM cards: MTN Rwanda or Airtel Rwanda. EAC roaming with MTN Burundi works but is expensive.

What Burundians notice

  1. Kinyarwanda is closer to Kirundi than expected. Mutual intelligibility is real — most Bujumbura visitors can hold basic conversations from day one. Kinyarwanda greetings welcome.
  2. The cleanliness. Rwanda's plastic-bag ban and Umuganda community cleaning leave Kigali visibly cleaner than Bujumbura.
  3. Traffic is more orderly. Kigali's road discipline is noticeably tighter.
  4. The pace is calmer. Most Burundian visitors describe Kigali as restorative — the city runs quieter than Bujumbura.
