Visiting Rwanda from Tanzania — the complete 2026 guide

Tanzania-Rwanda is one of East Africa's quieter cross-border corridors — less traffic than Kenya-Rwanda, less family-density than Uganda-Rwanda, but a steady flow of business and family-visit travel. The shared EAC framework makes the trip straightforward: visa-free entry on the Tanzanian passport, daily flights from Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Kilimanjaro (JRO), and the long road option via Rusumo for travellers moving cargo or vehicles. This is the complete 2026 guide.

Visa — none required

Tanzanian passport holders enter Rwanda visa-free under EAC arrangements. Six-month stamp on arrival, no fee. Show your passport at the airport or border; you're in.

Getting to Kigali

  1. Fly Dar es Salaam (DAR) → Kigali (KGL). RwandAir runs daily direct flights. 2 hours 30 minutes. Round-trip economy typically TZS 700,000-1,400,000. Book 2-4 weeks ahead.
  2. Fly Kilimanjaro (JRO) → Kigali via DAR. One-stop routing through Dar. Better for travellers in northern Tanzania (Arusha, Moshi).
  3. Fly Mwanza → Kigali via DAR. One-stop. Useful for Mwanza-based travellers who'd otherwise drive 12+ hours.
  4. Bus from Dar via Mwanza and Rusumo. Multiple operators run the route but it's 30-36 hours total and recommended only for budget-extreme travellers or cargo. TZS 80,000-120,000 one-way.
  5. Bus from Mwanza via Rusumo. Shorter — 12-14 hours. The practical Mwanza-Kigali option if you can't fly.

Rusumo One Stop Border Post handles both Tanzanian and Rwandan immigration in one stop. Bring your passport (national ID works for some short stays but passport is safer).

Currency and money

Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 2 RWF per Tanzanian Shilling (TZS 1,000 = ~2,000 RWF rough estimate, check current rate). Tanzanian Visa/Mastercard debit cards work at most Kigali ATMs. The simplest approach: bring USD 200-400 cash, exchange about half at the airport, keep the rest for hotel payments and emergencies.

What Tanzanians notice about Kigali

  1. It's much smaller than Dar. Kigali's population is about 1.7 million vs Dar's 7-8 million. The city feels more compact and walkable.
  2. English-French bilingualism vs Tanzania's Swahili-English. Swahili works in some Kigali contexts (especially with older Rwandans who studied in Tanzania) but English is the safer business default. Kinyarwanda greetings always welcome.
  3. Cleanliness is real. Rwanda's plastic-bag ban and Umuganda community-cleaning programme keep Kigali visibly cleaner than Dar.
  4. Cooler temperatures. Kigali's altitude (1,500m) means days are 23-26°C and nights drop to 15-18°C. Dar is consistently 25-32°C. Pack a light jumper.
  5. The hospitality is more formal but quicker. Service in Kigali tends to be polite and brisk; in Dar more leisurely. Adjust expectations on lunch length.

A 4-day Tanzanian itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival, check in, dinner at Sole Luna or Heaven Restaurant.
  • Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial in the morning, lunch at Nature Kigali, afternoon walking Kisimenti, dinner at Inka Steakhouse.
  • Day 3: Working coffee at One Cup or Question Coffee, lunch at Khana Khazana, afternoon at Inema Arts Center or shopping, dinner at Arabic Palace.
  • Day 4: Light morning, souvenirs at Caplaki Crafts Village, final lunch, afternoon flight or evening bus home.

Practical things

  • Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. Same as Tanzania's hotels. Some Tanzanian homes use type G — bring an adapter if you have G chargers.
  • Time zone: Same as Tanzania (CAT, UTC+2). Zero adjustment.
  • SIM cards: MTN Rwanda or Airtel Rwanda at the airport. Roaming with Vodacom Tanzania works but expensive.
  • Yellow fever certificate: Required if you're flying from regions where yellow fever is endemic; not required from coastal Tanzania.
