Natural-hair specialism is the fastest-growing salon category in Kigali. Five years ago it barely existed as a distinct format — the assumption was that any salon would handle natural-hair clients alongside relaxer and chemical-styling work. The result was uneven. Today the city has at least eight rooms that have built their entire practice around natural-hair care, locks, twists, braids, and protective styling. The reviews skew long and technical; the regulars name their stylists; the appointment lists fill weeks ahead.

What good natural-hair salons in Kigali do
- Named stylists. Clients return to a person, not a salon. The four highest-rated salons here all have specific stylists named repeatedly in their reviews.
- Consultation before the appointment. The strongest reviews mention that the salon discussed the client's hair history, scalp condition, and styling goals before committing to a service. Salons that skip this step end up in the lower-rated bracket.
- Product expertise. The salons selling their own product lines (Nappyhood, ILBA) consistently rate higher than those that don't — partly because product knowledge is the proxy for hair-care literacy.
- Time as the variable. A protective style done well in Kigali takes 3-6 hours depending on length and density. The salons that under-time the appointment rush the work; the ones that overestimate hold loyalty.

Practical things
- Booking ahead. Specialist appointments (sisterlocs, microlocs, complex braiding) book 2-4 weeks out. Plan accordingly.
- Deposits. 25-50% on booking is standard for the longer services. The salon needs to commit a stylist for hours.
- Bring references. Photos of the style you want help the consultation. Hair-density references — coil pattern, length, current condition — help even more.
- Hair products from home. Many salons will let you bring your own products if you have specific preferences. Confirm during booking.
- WhatsApp routing. Every salon on this list takes bookings via WhatsApp from their Kisimenti profile. The phone-call-to-book-an-appointment model has largely been replaced by WhatsApp.
