Rwanda has built one of Africa's more-active Chinese-Rwandan business relationships over the past decade — driven by infrastructure investment, agricultural collaboration, and a growing Chinese expatriate community in Kigali. For Chinese travellers, Rwanda offers a relatively easy visa process, a small but established Chinese restaurant cluster, and a stable safety environment. This is the complete 2026 guide.
Visa — e-Visa or visa-on-arrival
Chinese passport holders need a visa to enter Rwanda. Two options:
- e-Visa — apply at irembo.gov.rw 72+ hours before departure. USD 50 for 30-day single entry. Approval letter by email. Recommended.
- Visa-on-arrival — pay USD 50 at Kigali International Airport. 30-day single entry.
Getting to Kigali
- Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa. Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (PVG), Guangzhou (CAN) all connect to Addis; Ethiopian continues Addis-Kigali. Total ~18-22 hours. The most-used routing for Chinese travellers. Round-trip economy typically CNY 5,500-12,000.
- Qatar Airways via Doha. From multiple Chinese cities. Often runs competitive fares.
- Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Useful when combining a Kenya trip.
- Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. Worth checking — frequently the most-competitive fares.
- Emirates / Etihad via Dubai/Abu Dhabi. Reliable schedule, sometimes pricier.
Booking: 6-10 weeks ahead. Avoid Chinese New Year, Golden Week, and summer holiday peaks when fares double.
Currency and money
Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 180 RWF per Chinese Yuan (CNY 1 = ~180 RWF). UnionPay acceptance in Kigali is limited — bring a Visa or Mastercard for the trip. Bank of China Mastercard, ICBC Visa, and other internationally-branded Chinese cards work at most Kigali ATMs (Bank of Kigali, Equity, KCB). Bring USD 200-400 cash as backup. WeChat Pay and Alipay don't yet work cross-border with Rwandan merchants.
Where to stay

The Chinese restaurant cluster

The Chinese restaurant scene in Kigali is smaller than the Indian or West African clusters but reliable. Legend Chinese Restaurant is the anchor; a handful of smaller Chinese kitchens operate from within Chinese-business compounds and serve the community more privately.
What Chinese visitors notice
- It's much smaller than expected. Kigali population ~1.7 million — closer to a Chinese second-tier city than to Beijing or Shanghai. The smallness is part of the appeal — everything is walkable, traffic is light, the pace is calm.
- WeChat works for messaging. Outgoing WeChat messages and calls work over hotel Wi-Fi. WeChat Pay doesn't yet accept Rwandan merchants — pay with card or cash.
- English works universally. Mandarin doesn't carry; bring English. Most hotels and restaurants have at least one English-speaking staff member.
- The food range is bigger than the brochures suggest. Indian, Yemeni, Ethiopian, Italian, French, Argentine steakhouse — Kigali has an international restaurant cluster that Chinese travellers often find surprising.
- Phone coverage is excellent. Both MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda run reliable 4G/5G. Buy a local SIM at the airport for $5-15. International roaming with China Mobile is expensive.
A 5-day Chinese-trip itinerary

Practical things
- Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. China uses A/C/I — only the C plugs work directly. Bring an adapter for A and I types.
- Time zone: Kigali is 6 hours behind Beijing (CAT UTC+2 vs CST UTC+8).
- Yellow fever: Not required from China.
- VPN: Standard practice if you want to use Google/Gmail/YouTube/Western services — Rwanda doesn't block these but you may have a VPN preference from home.
- Mandarin support: Limited. The Chinese embassy in Kigali (Kacyiru) is the resource for emergencies. Some hotel concierges can arrange Mandarin-speaking guides for additional fee.
