Visa — e-Visa or visa-on-arrival
Canadian passport holders need a visa. Two options:
- e-Visa — apply at irembo.gov.rw at least 72 hours before departure. USD 50 for 30-day single entry. Approval letter by email.
- Visa-on-arrival — pay USD 50 at Kigali International Airport. Card or cash. 30-day single entry.

Currency and money
Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 950 RWF per Canadian Dollar (CAD 1 = ~950 RWF). Canadian Visa/Mastercard debit cards (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC) work at Bank of Kigali, Equity Rwanda, KCB Rwanda ATMs. Bring USD 200-400 cash as backup — USD is universally accepted.

- It's safer than expected. Solo female travel, late-evening walks, walking with electronics visible — Kigali ranks consistently as one of Africa's safest capitals.
- Coffee culture is real. Canadian visitors used to good coffee in Toronto or Montreal find Question Coffee, Rubia, Shamba and the Kigali specialty cluster genuinely competitive with the best North American cafés.
- The food range is bigger than expected. Italian, Yemeni, Argentine steakhouse, Indian, Ethiopian, French, plant-forward — Kigali has all of these, most are good.
- Phone coverage is excellent. MTN and Airtel run reliable 4G/5G. Buy a local SIM at the airport.
- Altitude matters. 1,500m means the first 24-48 hours can feel slightly breathless. Hydrate.
Practical things
- Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. Canadian type-A/B plugs don't fit. Bring a universal adapter.
- Time zone: Kigali is 6-9 hours ahead of Canadian time zones depending on coast and DST.
- Yellow fever: Not required from Canada unless connecting via an endemic country.
