Rwanda's mobile network is one of the strongest in Africa — full 4G/5G across Kigali, reliable 4G across most of the country including Volcanoes National Park, Akagera and Lake Kivu. For visitors, the practical question is which SIM card to buy and how much data to plan for. The honest 2026 answer.

Two main networks

  • MTN Rwanda. The largest operator. 4G/5G coverage across Kigali; 4G across most of the country. Strong outside-Kigali coverage. The default for most visitors.
  • Airtel Rwanda. Second-largest. Comparable coverage in Kigali; slightly thinner outside the capital. Often slightly cheaper data bundles.

Buying a SIM at the airport

Both MTN and Airtel have SIM kiosks at Kigali International Airport in the arrivals area. Bring your passport (required for SIM registration in Rwanda — KYC is enforced).

  • SIM cost: 1,000-3,000 RWF (USD 0.80-2.30) for the SIM card itself
  • Starter bundle (data + minutes): 5,000-15,000 RWF (USD 4-12) typically
  • Time to set up: 5-10 minutes at the airport kiosk
  • Required for purchase: Passport (mandatory KYC). Your name appears on the SIM registration.

Data bundle prices 2026

Both MTN and Airtel offer similar data bundles. Rough 2026 pricing for prepaid bundles:

  • 1 GB / 1 day: 1,500-2,000 RWF (~USD 1.15-1.55)
  • 5 GB / 7 days: 5,000-7,000 RWF (~USD 3.85-5.40)
  • 10 GB / 30 days: 10,000-14,000 RWF (~USD 7.70-10.80)
  • Unlimited social-media bundles (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram only):** 1,000-2,000 RWF / 24 hours

For a 7-day Kigali trip, the 5GB/7-day bundle covers most usage — maps, WhatsApp, occasional video. For longer stays or heavy video/work usage, top up with bigger bundles.

Topping up — the local rhythm

Top-ups (called airtime) are sold in small denominations at every kiosk in Kigali. Hand over 1,000 RWF, get a scratch card or direct top-up to your number. Most data bundles you buy through the network app or by USSD code (e.g. *345# on MTN). The hotel concierge can usually help if you can't navigate the codes.

eSIM options

MTN Rwanda offers eSIM on most modern phones as of 2026. Activation at the airport kiosk or in-town store. Useful if your phone supports eSIM and you don't want to swap physical SIMs. Airtel eSIM is rolling out gradually.

Holafly, Airalo and similar global eSIM providers offer Rwanda data plans you can activate before you land. Generally 1.5-2x more expensive than a local SIM but no airport queue. Useful for shorter trips (2-3 days) where the convenience justifies the markup.

Wi-Fi quality across the city

  • International-tier hotels (Radisson Blu, Marriott, Serena, Mille Collines): Wi-Fi reliable, fast, free for guests. Good for video calls.
  • Mid-tier hotels and B&Bs: Wi-Fi available, speed varies. Confirm with the property at booking.
  • Specialty cafés (Question Coffee, One Cup, Shamba, Rubia, Aroma's, Feels): Wi-Fi reliable; the working-day register depends on it.
  • Bigger restaurants: Wi-Fi usually available; confirm at the table.
  • Smaller bars, brochette grills: Wi-Fi rarely available; you'll be using mobile data.

Coverage outside Kigali

  • Volcanoes National Park (Musanze): Good 4G across the town. Slightly thinner at the gorilla lodges in the forest.
  • Akagera National Park: 4G near park HQ; spottier in the interior of the park.
  • Lake Kivu (Rubavu, Karongi, Kibuye): Solid 4G in town areas; slightly thinner along the shoreline drives.
  • Nyungwe Forest: 4G at the lodges; thinner inside the forest.

MoMo — Mobile Money on the same SIM

Once you have an MTN or Airtel SIM, you can also set up MTN MoMo or Airtel Money. Useful for paying motos, brochette grills, small restaurants and markets that don't take cards. Setup at the airport kiosk is straightforward; ask the agent to activate MoMo when buying the SIM.
