Kigali is one of Africa's easier capital cities to navigate. The streets are paved, the traffic is lighter than most regional capitals, and the transport options range from $1 moto rides to $80 car-hire days. The practical question is which option for which kind of trip. This is the working 2026 guide.
Walking — where it works, where it doesn't
Walking inside a single district works well. Kisimenti retail circuit, Kacyiru café cluster, Kiyovu embassy quarter — all walkable within 15-25 minutes. The streets have real sidewalks, traffic is gentle, the air is clean. The catch is Kigali is hilly — a 1 km walk on the map can feel like 1.5 km. Pack walking shoes and don't try to walk between districts (Kigali's hills make district-to-district walking impractical beyond 2 km).
Moto-taxi — the most-used local option
Moto-taxis (motorcycle taxis) are the default short-trip mode for most of Kigali. They're licensed, helmeted, and cheap. The driver gives you a helmet (mandatory by law); you sit behind them; they navigate the traffic. Most in-city trips are 800-2,500 RWF (USD 0.60-1.90).
- Best for: short trips (1-5 km), avoiding traffic, daytime rides
- Pricing: 800-2,500 RWF most short trips; 2,500-5,000 RWF for longer cross-district rides
- Payment: Cash or MoMo (MTN Mobile Money) — most drivers prefer cash
- Negotiation: Agree on the price before getting on. Combien? in French or ni angahe? in Kinyarwanda gets you a quote. Move app (below) sets prices automatically.
- Safety: Drivers are licensed and most are professional. Helmets always provided. Some helmets are well-worn — bring your own if you'll moto a lot.
- Don't moto at night unless you know the route — visibility is the main concern, not safety.
Move — the ride-hailing app
Move is the local equivalent of Uber/Bolt. It works in Kigali for both moto-taxis and car-taxis. Download the Move app, register with a phone number (a local SIM helps), and request a ride. Pricing is set automatically, no negotiation. Card payment works through the app. The interface is in English.
- Best for: longer trips, evening rides, when you want predictable pricing, when you don't speak French or Kinyarwanda
- Pricing: Moto rides 1,500-4,000 RWF; car rides 2,500-9,000 RWF in-city
- Payment: Card via app, or cash on completion
- Coverage: Excellent in central Kigali; thinner in outer neighbourhoods
- Wait times: Usually 2-5 minutes for moto, 4-8 minutes for car
Regular taxi (saloon car)
Saloon-car taxis operate from hotel ranks and the airport. They don't have meters; agree the fare before getting in. Useful for airport transfers, longer trips with luggage, business meetings where moto isn't appropriate, evening rides.

- Airport to central Kigali: 10,000-15,000 RWF (USD 7-12)
- In-city short trip: 3,000-7,000 RWF (USD 2.30-5.30)
- Cross-district trip: 6,000-12,000 RWF
- Negotiation: Always agree before getting in. Hotel taxis from the rank are usually fixed-price.
Car hire — for the multi-day trip outside Kigali
For trips outside Kigali — Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu, Akagera, Nyungwe — a hired car with driver is the standard option. Self-drive is possible but the road network outside the main highways requires local knowledge. Most visitors hire a driver-and-car package.
- Pricing for car + driver: USD 80-150 per day depending on vehicle, fuel, distance
- 4WD vehicle for safari or gorilla trekking: USD 120-250 per day
- Self-drive saloon car: USD 40-80 per day (insurance + deposit required)
- Booking: through your hotel concierge, or with a Kigali tour operator. Several are in the Kisimenti directory.
- Pro tip: Negotiate inclusive-of-fuel rates for predictability. Round-trip Kigali-Volcanoes ~600 km — at Rwandan diesel prices that's a meaningful difference.
Public buses (omnibus)
Kigali has a network of public minibuses running fixed routes for 200-600 RWF per trip. Useful for residents; less practical for visitors because routes aren't well-documented for tourists and most buses don't have English signage. For an authentic-Kigali experience worth one trip; for actual transport efficiency, use Move or moto.
Which option for which trip
- Airport → hotel: Regular taxi from the rank (10-15K RWF) or pre-arranged hotel pickup
- Hotel → Kigali Genocide Memorial (3-5 km): Moto or Move (1-3K RWF). Walking only if you're staying nearby.
- Hotel → Kisimenti retail district (varies): Move car if from Kiyovu/Kacyiru (5-8K RWF); walk if you're staying in Kisimenti already.
- Cross-Kigali evening dinner: Move car or taxi. Avoid evening motos unless you know the route.
- Day trip to Akagera or Volcanoes: Hired car with driver. Don't try to do these by public transport.
- Conference at Convention Centre: Walking distance from Radisson Blu, or short Move car ride from Marriott/Serena.
