Lake Kivu hosts a small but growing collection of hotels and resorts across its three Rwandan-side towns — Rubavu (north), Karongi (centre), and Cyangugu (south). Each town has its own register; each tier has reliable options. This is the working 2026 guide to where to stay.
Rubavu (Gisenyi) — the busiest, closest to Volcanoes
The natural choice if combining Lake Kivu with the gorilla trek — Rubavu is 1.5 hours from Musanze. Largest town, most-developed tourism infrastructure, the most range of hotel options.
Top tier
- Serena Hotel Rubavu (Lake Kivu Serena). USD 350-650 per night. The international-tier lakefront. Private beach, multiple restaurants, full-service spa.
- Lake Kivu Serena Hotel. Same brand grouping. Reliable Serena standard.
Mid-luxury
- Paradis Malahide. USD 120-250 per night. Boutique lakefront resort — smaller scale, the boutique-by-the-water register.
- Stipp Hotel Gisenyi. USD 100-180 per night. Mid-tier modern hotel.

Karongi (Kibuye) — the quieter middle
Smaller, slower, the small-town Rwanda lake experience. Less infrastructure but more atmospheric. The thinking person's Lake Kivu choice.
Top tier
- Cormoran Lodge. USD 250-450 per night. The hillside eco-luxury option. Wood-and-stone lodges; the slowest-paced premium lake stay.
Mid-luxury

- Centre Bethanie. USD 50-100 per night. Community-run, simple, friendly.
Cyangugu (Rusizi) — the gateway to Nyungwe

- Peace Guest House. USD 50-100 per night. Modest, lakeside, friendly.
