Visa â e-Visa or visa-on-arrival
Australian passport holders need a visa. Apply via e-Visa at irembo.gov.rw at least 72 hours ahead (USD 50), or pay USD 50 visa-on-arrival at Kigali airport.
Getting to Kigali
- Qatar Airways via Doha. Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Perth, Brisbane â Doha â Kigali. The most-used Australian routing. Total ~24-28 hours. Round-trip economy AUD 2,200-4,800.
- Singapore Airlines + Ethiopian via Singapore-Addis. Long-haul via Singapore then Addis. Worth checking for fare sales.
- Emirates/flydubai via Dubai. Multiple Australian cities to Dubai then onward.
- Qantas/Kenya Airways via Johannesburg-Nairobi. Worth considering for a longer Africa trip.
Currency and money
Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Cross-rate: roughly 850 RWF per Australian Dollar (AUD 1 = ~850 RWF). Australian Visa/Mastercard cards (CommBank, NAB, ANZ, Westpac) work at Bank of Kigali, Equity, KCB ATMs. Bring USD 200-400 cash as backup â USD widely accepted.
Where to stay
A 9-day itinerary that justifies the flight
- Days 1-3: Kigali. Recovery from jet lag, Genocide Memorial, Kigali walking, slow lunches.
- Days 4-5: Volcanoes National Park. Drive 2.5 hours to Musanze, gorilla trek on Day 5.
- Day 6: Lake Kivu. Drive 1.5 hours from Musanze to Rubavu for a slower lakeside day.
- Day 7: Return to Kigali. Final shopping, museum, slow dinner.
- Days 8-9: Akagera National Park safari (drive 3 hours, overnight in park, return Day 9).
- Day 10: Departure.
Practical things
- Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. Australian Type I doesn't fit. Bring adapter.
- Time zone: Kigali 7-9 hours behind Australian eastern time depending on DST.
- Yellow fever: Not required from Australia unless connecting via an endemic country.
- Gorilla permits: USD 1,500. Book 6+ months ahead through RDB.
