Where should we do my birthday is the question that sets the entire shape of the day. A dinner-for-six is a different problem from a garden-party-for-eighty, and Kigali's venues are built for specific point on that spectrum — not for all of them. The right answer depends on guest count, the vibe you want, and how much of the planning you want to do yourself.
Twelve birthday venues across Kigali, sorted by the kind of party you're throwing.
Dinner for 6-12 — the close-friends meal
Most birthday celebrations at this scale are just a good dinner with the people you actually want to see. The premium restaurants handle this well — book a long table at the back, plan a shared menu, let the kitchen do the work.

Garden-feel party for 20-40 — the outdoor day
Slightly bigger guest count, outdoor seating, the party that runs daytime-to-evening. Kigali's garden-restaurants do this well.

Rooftop and view — the photogenic celebration

Larger — 50 guests and beyond
At fifty-plus guests, a restaurant booking starts to break down. You need a venue with proper event capacity, dedicated event coordination, and a kitchen sized for the booking.
Cocktail / lounge — the after-9pm crowd
Some birthdays don't want dinner — they want a private cocktail-bar takeover. Smaller rooms handle this well.

How to plan it
- Decide guest count first. Everything else follows. Under 12, restaurants do it. 12-40, garden or rooftop. 40+, dedicated event venue.
- Book early. Saturday evenings in Kigali book 2-4 weeks ahead at the popular rooms. Weekday birthdays are easier but the energy is different.
- Set the menu in advance. Shared family-style works better than à-la-carte for groups of 8+. The kitchen runs smoother and the bill is predictable. Most restaurants will quote a per-head set menu when you ask.
- Plan for cake. Most restaurants will let you bring an outside cake for a corkage fee (3,000-8,000 RWF). Confirm at booking. Or order one from one of our bakeries.
- Tip the coordinator. The person who handled the booking — almost always reachable by WhatsApp — deserves a separate envelope at the end. 10,000-30,000 RWF is normal.
