Walking Kacyiru in an afternoon — the diplomatic quarter, slowly

Kacyiru is the embassy district, the NGO district, and quietly one of the best coffee blocks in East Africa. Three hours, a slow loop, a few stops worth making.

Kacyiru is the part of Kigali people pass through on their way to other parts of Kigali. The embassies are here, the UN cluster is here, several Rwandan ministries are here. It's not a destination neighbourhood. Which is why it has, over the last five years, quietly become the densest specialty coffee block in East Africa: the coffee shops grew up to feed the embassy lunch crowd and the NGO staff, and now they're some of the best in the city.

This is the slow loop. Three hours if you stop, two if you don't. Start at 2pm if you want light; start at 4pm if you want to slide into dinner. Either way, the rhythm is: café, walk, café, food, café, walk.

Start at Question Coffee Gishushu

Question Coffee Gishushu

4.61,304 reviews

The anchor café for both Kacyiru and Kisimenti. Multiple sitting rooms, hundreds of reviewers calling it the best in Kigali. The Question Coffee here trains women coffee farmers and roasts their beans on site.

Start with the espresso. If you're going to do five cafés in three hours, calibrate on the cleanest first.

Walk south to Kivu Noir

Specialty coffee, slow service in the right way. Smaller and quieter than Question Coffee, with an espresso programme that takes itself seriously.

Kivu Noir is where the Kacyiru café scene moves from popular to specialised. The room is smaller. Most people are reading or working. The barista will explain what's in the cup.

Lunch at Repub Lounge or Sundowner

Sundowner — Restaurants in Kacyiru Sud, Kigali

Sundowner

4.21,946 reviews

Both are walking distance from Kivu Noir. Repub Lounge leans contemporary, Sundowner is the long-running classic. Either way, mid-afternoon lunch in Kacyiru Sud is the rhythm of the neighbourhood — the diplomatic and NGO professionals here eat at this hour because they work through the morning.

A pastry stop at PĂątisserie Royale

After lunch, before the next coffee. The croissants are real. So is the chocolat.

Finish at Rubia Coffee Roasters

Rubia Coffee Roasters

4.2318 reviews

The roaster's roaster. Where the other cafés' baristas come on their day off. Single-origin pour-overs, very serious about extraction, calm room.

Rubia is the end of the loop. If you ordered an espresso at Question Coffee three hours ago and a pour-over at Rubia now, you've probably had four cups of coffee. Take the long way back to wherever you're going.

What you've learned by the end

  • Kacyiru is denser than it looks. Five legitimate specialty cafĂ©s within a square kilometre.
  • The professional pace is real. Mid-afternoon is the rush. Lunch at 1pm is the work-from-Kacyiru hour.
  • Coffee is the local export. Most cafĂ©s source from cooperatives, not commodity beans. The difference is in the cup.
