The Netherlands has one of the longest-standing development relationships with Rwanda among European countries — Dutch NGOs, university partnerships, and a steady tourist stream make Amsterdam-Kigali one of the better-supported European corridors. KLM runs direct daily flights between Amsterdam and Kigali, and the trip is well-trodden enough that most logistics are predictable. This is the complete 2026 guide.

Visa — e-Visa or visa-on-arrival

Dutch passport holders need a visa. Apply via e-Visa at irembo.gov.rw 72 hours ahead (USD 50), or pay USD 50 visa-on-arrival.

Getting to Kigali

  1. KLM direct Amsterdam (AMS) → Kigali (KGL). Daily direct service. ~8.5 hours. Round-trip economy €600-1,100. The default Dutch routing.
  2. Brussels Airlines via Brussels. AMS → BRU → KGL. Useful if KLM is booked.
  3. Qatar Airways via Doha. Less direct but worth checking for fare sales.
  4. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis. Often cheapest, longer total time.

Currency and money

Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Cross-rate: roughly 1,400 RWF per Euro. Dutch Visa/Mastercard cards (ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, SNS) work at Bank of Kigali, Equity, KCB ATMs. Bring USD 200-400 cash as backup.

What Dutch visitors notice

  1. The cycling-friendly streets surprise. Kigali has invested heavily in road infrastructure including some dedicated cycling lanes. Not Amsterdam-level, but visible.
  2. The cleanliness. Rwanda's plastic-bag ban and Umuganda community cleaning leave the streets visibly pristine.
  3. English works universally. Dutch doesn't carry; French still common with older Rwandans.
  4. Coffee culture is real. Question Coffee, Rubia, Shamba match the standards of Amsterdam specialty cafés.
  5. Altitude. 1,500m. First 24-48 hours can feel slightly demanding.

Practical things

  • Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. Same as the Netherlands. Chargers work directly.
  • Time zone: Kigali 1 hour ahead of Netherlands in winter; same in summer.
  • Yellow fever: Not required from Netherlands.
  • SIM cards: MTN Rwanda or Airtel Rwanda at the airport.
