Visa â visa-on-arrival or e-Visa
US passport holders need a visa to enter Rwanda. Two options:

- Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. From multiple US cities. Often very competitive on fare.
- Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Direct US-Nairobi from JFK, then 1h40 onward to Kigali. Total time 23-27 hours.
Booking: 8-12 weeks ahead for the best fares. Avoid US holiday peaks (Thanksgiving through New Year, mid-July) when fares can spike. Mid-week departures usually cheapest.
Currency and money
Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 1,300 RWF per USD. For US visitors:
