Rwanda is the African country US travellers most-often pick for their first sub-Saharan trip. The reasons stack: a stable safety record, an English-friendly business and hospitality environment, gorilla trekking, the post-genocide story that international media has covered consistently, and a US-Rwanda diplomatic relationship that's been warm enough that consular and visa logistics are straightforward. This is the complete 2026 guide.

Visa — visa-on-arrival or e-Visa

US passport holders need a visa to enter Rwanda. Two options:

  1. Visa-on-arrival — pay USD 50 at Kigali International Airport. 30-day single entry. Cash or card.
  2. e-Visa — apply at irembo.gov.rw at least 72 hours before departure. Same USD 50 fee. Approval letter by email; walk straight through immigration.

Flights — US cities to Kigali

No direct flights from the US to Rwanda as of 2026. The standard one-stop routings:

  1. Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH). From JFK, LAX, IAH, Atlanta, IAD, ORD. The default for most US visitors. Total trip time 22-26 hours. Round-trip economy USD 1,200-2,400.
  2. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa. From IAD, Newark, Chicago, LAX. Often the cheapest option in fare sales. Total time 22-26 hours.
  3. KLM via Amsterdam. From JFK, ATL, DTW, IAD, MSP, SFO, BOS, LAX. Reliable daily routing. Total time 22-25 hours.
  4. Brussels Airlines via Brussels. From Newark, IAD, JFK. Direct Brussels-Kigali on the Brussels Airlines side.
  5. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. From multiple US cities. Often very competitive on fare.
  6. Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Direct US-Nairobi from JFK, then 1h40 onward to Kigali. Total time 23-27 hours.

Booking: 8-12 weeks ahead for the best fares. Avoid US holiday peaks (Thanksgiving through New Year, mid-July) when fares can spike. Mid-week departures usually cheapest.

Currency and money

Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 1,300 RWF per USD. For US visitors:

  • Bring USD 300-500 in cash. USD is universally accepted at the airport currency desk and at hotels for direct payment. Bring crisp, post-2013 notes — older or marked bills can be rejected.
  • Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card. Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture, Charles Schwab debit. All work at Bank of Kigali, Equity Rwanda, and KCB Rwanda ATMs. Withdrawal limits typically RWF 400,000 per transaction.
  • Card acceptance is good. Hotels, mid-range restaurants, supermarkets all take Visa/Mastercard. AmEx less commonly accepted; bring a Visa as backup.

What to do — the 7-day American itinerary

  1. Day 1 — arrival. Land late afternoon (most US-Kigali flights via Doha or Amsterdam arrive in the evening). Check in. Light dinner at the hotel; early night for the jet lag.
  2. Day 2 — Kigali. Morning: Kigali Genocide Memorial (essential; 2-3 hours; emotionally heavy). Lunch at Heaven or Nature Kigali. Afternoon: Inema Arts Center, walk Kisimenti. Dinner at The Hut Restaurant.
  3. Day 3 — Kigali continued. Working coffee morning at Question Coffee Gishushu. Lunch at Khana Khazana. Afternoon: Niyo Arts Center or Caplaki Crafts Village (souvenir shopping). Dinner at Arabic Palace.
  4. Day 4 — drive to Volcanoes National Park. 2.5 hours by car or driver. Stay at one of the gorilla lodges (Bisate, Sabyinyo Silverback, or Mountain Gorilla View). Evening at the lodge.
  5. Day 5 — gorilla trekking. Early morning briefing, ~4-6 hour trek with the gorilla family group. Permit USD 1,500 (book 6+ months ahead through RDB). Afternoon rest at lodge.
  6. Day 6 — Lake Kivu or back to Kigali. Drive from Musanze to Rubavu (1.5 hrs) for the Lake Kivu shoreline. Or return to Kigali for an extra day.
  7. Day 7 — Kigali, departure. Final shopping at Simba, final lunch at Sole Luna, late afternoon airport for evening flight back.

What American visitors notice

  1. It's much cleaner than expected. Rwanda's plastic-bag ban (since 2008) and Umuganda (community cleaning, last Saturday of every month) keep the streets visibly pristine. Many Americans find this striking after the loose litter culture of larger US cities.
  2. It's safer than expected. Solo female travel, late-evening walks, leaving phones on tables — Kigali has a safety reputation that's earned. The US State Department travel advisory rates Rwanda Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) as of 2026.
  3. The food is internationally calibrated. US visitors often arrive expecting limited dining options and find the opposite — Italian, Indian, Argentine steakhouse, Yemeni, Ethiopian, Japanese, French. Most rooms are good.
  4. The pace is gentler than American business travel. Meetings start on time but proceed at a more relaxed clip. The post-lunch dip is real; restaurants and offices run quietly between 1 PM and 3 PM.
  5. Phone coverage is excellent. Most US visitors expect spotty connectivity and find full 4G/5G across Kigali. Buy a local SIM at the airport for $5-15 — your US plan's international roaming is overkill.

Practical things

  • Plug type: Type C and J (European 2-pin and 3-pin), 230V. Bring a universal adapter. Type-A US plugs do not fit Rwandan outlets.
  • Time zone: Central Africa Time (UTC+2). 7-9 hours ahead of US Eastern depending on daylight saving.
  • Tipping: 10% at restaurants is generous. Round up moto fares. Lodge staff for safari/gorilla trips: USD 10-20 per day per traveller is appropriate.
  • Yellow fever certificate: Not required from the US. Required if you're connecting through an endemic country (some West African or South American connections).
  • Malaria risk: Low in Kigali (1,500m altitude). Higher in Akagera and lower-elevation regions. Consult a travel-medicine clinic 4-6 weeks before departure; antimalarials are common for safari trips.
  • Travel insurance: Recommended. Gorilla trekking and safari involve some physical risk; medical evacuation from remote areas can run USD 20,000+ without coverage.
  • Bring: Power-bank, walking shoes (Kigali is hilly), light layers (1,500m altitude means cooler evenings), sunglasses (equatorial sun), USD cash in crisp notes.
