Rwanda has a long-running Indian community â particularly Gujarati and South Indian â that dates back decades and anchors a serious Indian restaurant cluster across Kigali. For Indian travellers visiting Rwanda for business, tourism, or family connections, the country offers a familiar food register alongside the gorilla-trekking and safari draw. This is the complete 2026 guide.
Visa â e-Visa or visa-on-arrival
Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Rwanda. Two options, both USD 50:
- e-Visa â apply at irembo.gov.rw 72+ hours before departure. Approval letter by email; walk through immigration directly. The recommended option.
- Visa-on-arrival â pay USD 50 at Kigali International Airport (card or cash). Adds 15-20 minutes at arrival.
Getting to Kigali
- Qatar Airways via Doha. Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata all run flights to Doha; Qatar continues Doha-Kigali. Total ~12-15 hours. The default Indian-Rwanda routing. Round-trip economy INR 45,000-95,000.
- Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa. From Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore. Star Alliance miles option. Often the cheapest in fare sales.
- Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Mumbai-Nairobi-Kigali. Useful when combining with a Kenya trip.
- Emirates / flydubai via Dubai. Multiple Indian cities to Dubai, then onward. Sometimes the simplest schedule.
- Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. Worth checking for competitive fares.
Booking: 4-8 weeks ahead. The Mumbai/Delhi-Doha-Kigali route gets fare-sale frequency from Qatar â set price alerts.
Currency and money
Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). 2026 cross-rate: roughly 15 RWF per Indian Rupee (INR 100 = ~1,500 RWF). Indian Visa/Mastercard debit cards work at Bank of Kigali, Equity Rwanda, KCB Rwanda ATMs. ICICI, HDFC, SBI, Axis cards all work fine internationally. Bring USD 200-400 cash as backup. UPI doesn't yet work cross-border with Rwanda.
The Indian community in Kigali
Kigali's Indian community is one of East Africa's quietest but most-stable. Long-running Gujarati and Tamil family businesses; a growing tech and consulting presence in the Kacyiru-Kimihurura corridor; an active religious community (Hindu temple in Nyabugogo, Sikh gurdwara, growing mosque attendance among Indian Muslims). The Indian restaurant cluster across Kigali serves both the community and the broader city.

Where to stay

What Indian visitors notice
- The food is more familiar than expected. Beyond the Indian restaurant cluster, most Kigali kitchens accommodate vegetarian-and-Jain-leaning preferences. Confirm specific requirements (no garlic, no onion, no root vegetables) at the table; most Kigali chefs are adaptable.
- English works universally. Hindi/Gujarati/Tamil don't carry. English is the working business and hospitality language.
- Vegetarian food beyond Indian is widely available. Nature Kigali, the cafés, the European-style restaurants all carry strong vegetarian options. Vegetarianism isn't unusual in Kigali; you won't be the only vegetarian at the table.
- The pace is calmer than Mumbai or Delhi. Traffic, business meetings, dining â all run at a more measured tempo. Most Indian visitors find this restorative.
- Currency is reliable. No INR cash exchange in Kigali (unlike USD or EUR). Convert at airport on arrival; use ATM for top-ups.
A 5-day Indian-trip itinerary
- Day 1: Arrival, check in, light dinner at hotel or Khana Khazana for the comfort-food welcome.
- Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial morning, lunch at Heaven Restaurant, afternoon Kisimenti walking, dinner at Sole Luna or Arabic Palace.

Practical things
- Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. India uses C/D/M â the C plugs work directly. D plugs need an adapter.
- Time zone: Kigali is 2.5 hours behind India (CAT UTC+2 vs IST UTC+5:30).
- Yellow fever: Not required from India.
- SIM cards: MTN Rwanda or Airtel Rwanda at the airport. Cheaper than international roaming.
- Vegetarian and Jain food: Available across the city. Confirm specifics with each restaurant.
