Setting Up Business Social Media Profiles

Your social media profiles are often the first thing people check after hearing about your business. Here’s how to set them up properly from day one.

I audited 30 Kigali business Instagram accounts last month. 14 had no bio. 8 had no phone number. 11 were using personal accounts instead of business accounts. All of these are free to fix and take less than 10 minutes.

Instagram Business

  1. Download Instagram and create an account (or convert your personal to business)
  2. Go to Settings → Account → Switch to Professional Account → Business
  3. Profile photo: your logo (not a personal photo)
  4. Name: your business name (searchable, so include keywords if natural)
  5. Bio: what you do + location + one call-to-action. Example: “Custom cakes 🎂 Kigali | Order via link below”
  6. Contact: add phone, email, address
  7. Link: your website URL. If you don’t have a website, your Kisimenti URL works perfectly

Facebook Business Page

  1. Go to facebook.com/pages/create
  2. Choose your category (Local Business, Company, Brand, etc.)
  3. Page name: exact business name
  4. Profile photo: logo
  5. Cover photo: professional photo of your work, space, or team
  6. About section: complete every field — description, address, hours, phone, website, email
  7. Call-to-action button: set to “Call Now”, “Send Message”, or “Book Now”

LinkedIn Company Page

  1. Go to linkedin.com/company/setup/new
  2. Company name: exact legal name
  3. Logo and banner: professional, matching other platforms
  4. About: 200-word company description with keywords
  5. Industry and company size: fill accurately
  6. Website URL: link to your business website

WhatsApp Business

  1. Download WhatsApp Business (separate app from regular WhatsApp)
  2. Register with your business phone number
  3. Profile photo: logo
  4. Business name and description: what you do
  5. Address and hours: fill in completely
  6. Catalogue: add your products or services with photos and prices
  7. Quick replies: set up responses for common questions
  8. Away message: set auto-reply for after-hours

The consistency checklist

Across all platforms, these must be identical:

  • Business name spelling
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • Logo
  • Website URL

Set all of these up in one sitting — it takes about an hour total and you’ll have a consistent, professional presence across every platform that matters.
