If you need a visa to enter Rwanda, the e-Visa through irembo.gov.rw is the easiest path. It saves you the 20-minute queue at Kigali International Airport's visa-on-arrival counter and gives you an approval letter you can show to your airline at boarding. Most nationalities that need a Rwandan visa get approved within 24-48 hours, though the official window is 72. This guide walks the application step by step.

Who needs the e-Visa

African Union passport holders don't need any visa (visa-free 30 days). Kenyan passports get 6-month visa-free entry. A small list of other countries — Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Indonesia — also get visa-free entry. Everyone else needs either the e-Visa or visa-on-arrival. The e-Visa is the recommended path.

Before you start — what to have ready

  • A scanned passport bio page (the page with your photo and details). JPG or PDF, under 1 MB.
  • A passport-style photo taken in the last 6 months. JPG, under 1 MB. White background, no glasses.
  • Return flight confirmation (or onward ticket). PDF preferred.
  • Hotel booking confirmation for your first night. Booking.com, Marriott, Hilton, or any other PDF confirmation works.
  • A working email address for the approval letter.
  • A credit/debit card to pay the USD 50 fee. International Visa or Mastercard.
  • Yellow fever certificate if you're arriving from an endemic country. Most West African passports need this.

Step 1 — open irembo.gov.rw

Go to irembo.gov.rw in your browser. The page loads in English by default; you can switch to French or Kinyarwanda from the top-right. Look for Visa Services under the Immigration category, or search visa in the service search bar at the top.

Step 2 — pick the right visa type

You'll see a list of visa types. For most visitors, choose Tourist Visa (V1) for 30 days single entry. If you're staying longer or visiting twice, V2 (multiple entry, 90 days) is USD 100. For the East African Tourist Visa (Rwanda + Kenya + Uganda for 90 days, USD 100), there's a separate option. Pick the one that matches your trip.

Step 3 — fill the personal details

The form asks for: full name (exactly as on passport), date of birth, nationality, passport number, passport expiry date (must be 6+ months from your travel date), occupation, home address. Get the spelling right — small mistakes here trigger manual review and add 24 hours to processing.

Step 4 — travel details

Enter your planned arrival date, departure date, flight number (if known), and purpose of visit. Tourism is the standard answer; if you're attending a conference or business meeting, choose accordingly. Then upload your return ticket and hotel booking confirmation.

Step 5 — upload documents

Upload the passport bio page scan, the passport-style photo, the return ticket, and the hotel booking confirmation. Each file under 1 MB. JPG or PDF. The system will accept the upload if format and size are correct.

Step 6 — pay USD 50

Click through to the payment page. Enter Visa or Mastercard details. The charge goes through immediately; you'll get an email confirmation with a reference number. The fee is non-refundable if the application is rejected.

Step 7 — wait for approval

Most applications are approved within 24-48 hours. The official window is 72 hours. You'll receive an email with an approval letter (PDF) attached. Print it. Bring it with you. The airline at boarding may ask to see it; immigration on arrival will verify it.

Common mistakes that delay approval

  1. Passport expiry date too close to travel. Rwanda requires 6+ months validity from your arrival date, not your departure. Renew before applying if you're within that window.
  2. Spelling mismatch between form and passport. Exact spelling matters — Anna Marie on the passport must be entered exactly as Anna Marie on the form, not Anna-Marie or AnnaMarie.
  3. Upload file too large. 1 MB cap. Compress photos before uploading (most phone images are 2-4 MB).
  4. Missing yellow fever certificate when arriving from an endemic country. The system asks; answer honestly.
  5. Hotel booking dated wrong. The booking must cover your first night of arrival; vague Airbnb reservations sometimes don't pass.

On arrival

Show the printed approval letter to the immigration officer at Kigali International Airport. They check it against the system, stamp your passport, and you're in. No fee at the airport (you've already paid). The whole process takes 5-10 minutes if no queues.

If your e-Visa application is rejected

Rejections are uncommon but happen — usually for incomplete documents, passport-validity issues, or unverifiable accommodation. You can re-apply with corrected information; you'll need to pay the USD 50 again. If you can't resolve the issue remotely, the visa-on-arrival option at Kigali airport is the backup — pay USD 50, same documents, get approved at the counter.
