The 10-day Rwanda itinerary — Kigali plus everything (2026)

Ten days, every region, the full Rwanda circuit done properly — Kigali, Volcanoes, Lake Kivu, Akagera, and Nyungwe. The practical 2026 itinerary as the operators would actually structure it.

Ten days in Rwanda lets you do every region without rushing — Kigali for the city days, Volcanoes for gorillas, Akagera for safari, Lake Kivu for the slow contrast, Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees and the canopy walk. Most travellers who arrive thinking I'll fit it all in five days leave wishing they'd done ten. This is the working 2026 itinerary.

The shape of the ten days

  • Days 1-2 — Kigali. Recovery, Genocide Memorial, the working cafĂ© days, the slow lunches.
  • Days 3-5 — Volcanoes National Park. Drive up, gorilla trek, golden monkey trek or rest day.
  • Day 6 — Lake Kivu. Drive from Musanze to Rubavu (1.5 hours). Slow lakeside day.
  • Day 7 — Lake Kivu boat day or drive south to Karongi (the quieter shoreline town).
  • Day 8 — Nyungwe Forest. Drive from Karongi or Cyangugu to Nyungwe lodges. Afternoon canopy walk.
  • Day 9 — chimpanzee trek at Nyungwe. Plus drive back toward Kigali via Huye.
  • Day 10 — final Kigali day, departure.

Day 1 — arrival

Land afternoon. Hotel check-in, light dinner at Sole Luna or Nature Kigali, early night. Don't try to do anything heavy on Day 1 — most international flights leave you jet-lagged.

Day 2 — Kigali on foot

Morning at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Lunch at Heaven Restaurant or Nature Kigali. Afternoon walking Kisimenti — shopping, coffee, the Inema Arts Center. Dinner at The Hut Restaurant for the rooftop view.

Day 3 — drive to Musanze (Volcanoes gateway)

Late morning departure. 2.5 hours by car through the highlands to Musanze. Check into your gorilla lodge — Bisate, Sabyinyo Silverback, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, or the more budget-friendly Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel. Afternoon rest at lodge. Early dinner, early night.

Day 4 — gorilla trekking

5 AM breakfast. 7 AM briefing at park HQ. 2-6 hour trek with the gorilla family. One hour in their presence. Return to lodge for late lunch. Afternoon rest. The hour you'll remember for life.

Day 5 — Volcanoes optional + drive to Lake Kivu

Two options. Either: golden monkey trek in the morning (USD 100 permit; less physical than gorilla trek). Or: rest morning, late breakfast, then drive 1.5 hours to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Late afternoon at the lakeside hotel.

Day 6 — Lake Kivu boat day

Boat tour to one of the islands (Iwawa, Napoleon). Lunch on the water or back at the hotel. Afternoon swim, paddleboard, kayak. Sunset cocktail with views across to the DRC mountains.

Day 7 — drive south along Lake Kivu

Drive from Rubavu to Karongi (3 hours) — the quieter middle of Lake Kivu. Check into a Karongi hotel. Afternoon walk along the shoreline, late lunch, slow evening.

Day 8 — drive to Nyungwe Forest

From Karongi or Cyangugu (south of Lake Kivu) drive into Nyungwe Forest. Check into One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Forest Lodge, or Top View Hotel for the budget-friendly option. Afternoon: the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk — 70 metres above the forest floor, suspended walkway through the canopy.

Day 9 — Nyungwe chimpanzee trek + drive toward Kigali

Early-morning chimpanzee trek (USD 90 permit). 2-5 hour trek through the rainforest. Mid-morning return. Late breakfast at lodge. Begin the drive back toward Kigali, stopping in Huye (formerly Butare) for lunch at one of the small university-town cafés. Continue to Kigali (3 hours from Huye).

Day 10 — Kigali final day, departure

Morning shopping at Simba Supermarket, final coffee at Question Coffee, lunch at Inka Steakhouse or Khana Khazana, late-afternoon flight home.

Cost summary

  • Gorilla permit: USD 1,500
  • Chimpanzee permit: USD 90
  • Akagera entrance (if added — skipped in this version): USD 100/day
  • Mid-luxury hotels and lodges (9 nights): USD 1,200-3,500
  • Driver-guide (10 days): USD 800-1,500
  • Park entry fees + activities: USD 200-400
  • Meals, drinks, tips: USD 400-700
  • Total per person, mid-luxury: USD 4,500-8,000

What this itinerary leaves out

Akagera safari. To add it, extend to 12-14 days, slotting Akagera between Day 2 and Day 3 (or after Day 10 if you can extend). Some travellers compress by skipping Nyungwe and adding Akagera instead — the rainforest vs savanna trade-off depends on what you'd most regret missing.
