Registering a .com takes five minutes on any registrar worldwide. Registering a .rw takes a few more steps because it’s managed by the Rwanda Internet Community and Technology Alliance (RICTA). It’s not difficult, but the process is different from what you might expect.
The .rw registration process
- Check availability at nic.rw — search for your desired domain to see if it’s taken
- Choose an accredited registrar — you can’t register directly with RICTA. You go through an accredited registrar
- Submit your application — you’ll need to provide business registration documents (for .co.rw) or personal ID (for .rw)
- Pay the registration fee — typically RWF 25,000–45,000/year depending on the registrar
- Wait for activation — usually 1–3 business days, though some registrars offer faster processing
.rw domain types
- .rw — general purpose, available to individuals and businesses
- .co.rw — commercial, requires business registration
- .ac.rw — academic institutions
- .gov.rw — government entities
- .org.rw — non-profit organisations
- .net.rw — network/tech companies
Most businesses go with plain .rw (shorter, cleaner) or .co.rw (clearly commercial). Plain .rw is generally preferred — shorter is better for a domain.
Registering a .com from Rwanda
This is simpler. Use any global registrar:
- Namecheap — cheapest, clean interface. From ~USD 9/year
- Cloudflare — at-cost pricing (no markup). From ~USD 10/year
- Porkbun — affordable with free WHOIS privacy
All accept international Visa/Mastercard. Registration is instant.
What to do after registering
A domain by itself does nothing. After registration:
- Point it at your website — update DNS records to your hosting provider
- Set up email — add MX records for your email provider
- Enable WHOIS privacy — prevents your personal details from being publicly searchable (most registrars offer this free)
- Set auto-renewal — if your domain expires, someone else can register it. Always auto-renew
- Keep your registrar account secure — use a strong password and enable two-factor authentication
If you’d rather skip the DNS configuration entirely, website providers like Kisimenti handle domain registration, DNS setup, and hosting in one package. Register through them and everything is pre-configured.
