Visiting Rwanda from the DRC — the complete 2026 guide

Rwanda-DRC is one of the continent's most-active cross-border corridors — particularly the Gisenyi-Goma crossing, where commerce, family, and tourism flow in both directions daily. For Congolese travellers visiting Kigali, the trip is straightforward: visa-free entry on the AU framework, multiple road and air options, and a growing Congolese community in the Kigali commercial districts. This is the complete 2026 guide.

Visa — none required

DRC passport holders enter Rwanda visa-free for up to 30 days under the African Union framework. No fee, no application. Standard documents: passport, return ticket, proof of accommodation. Yellow fever certificate required from DRC.

Getting to Kigali

  1. Cross at Gisenyi-Goma (La Grande Barrière). The busiest land crossing. From Goma you cross into Rubavu, then bus or drive 3 hours to Kigali. Total Goma-Kigali ~4 hours.
  2. Cross at Rusizi-Bukavu. From Bukavu cross into Rusizi (Cyangugu), then drive ~6 hours to Kigali via the southern route.
  3. Fly Kinshasa (FIH) → Kigali (KGL). RwandAir and a few one-stop carriers via Addis or Nairobi. ~7-12 hours total depending on routing. For Kinshasa-based travellers this is the practical option.
  4. Fly Lubumbashi → Kigali. One-stop via Nairobi typically. ~10-14 hours.

Border crossings on the Gisenyi-Goma side typically take 20-45 minutes including currency exchange. Bring USD cash for the smoothest experience.

Currency and money

Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Cross-rate fluctuates — roughly 1 USD = 1,300 RWF, 1 USD = 2,800 CDF (Congolese Franc). USD cash widely accepted at the border and at Kigali hotels. Bring USD cash to convert at the airport/border or exchange in town.

Practical things

  • Plug type: Type C/J, 230V. Same as DRC.
  • Time zone: Same as Kinshasa is UTC+1 (WAT); Kigali is UTC+2 (CAT) — 1-hour difference. From Goma/Bukavu (UTC+2), no adjustment.
  • Language: French universally works, especially with older Rwandans. English is the working business language. Kinyarwanda greetings welcome. Lingala less commonly understood in Kigali.
  • Yellow fever certificate: Required from DRC. Don't fly or cross without it.
  • SIM cards: MTN Rwanda or Airtel Rwanda. EAC/regional roaming with Vodacom or Orange can work but expensive.
