Kigali winds down earlier than Nairobi, Kampala, or Lagos. The city's kitchens close around 10:30 on a weeknight; the bars shut at 12:30 or 1; the streets at 11pm are quieter than the same hour in most African capitals. That's a feature for residents and a frustration for visitors who didn't budget for it. But the city isn't asleep at 10 — a smaller, specific set of rooms keep going. This is the late-night map.

What's open after 1am
Very little, honestly. Kigali doesn't have the 3am bar scene that Nairobi, Kampala, or Dar enjoys. By 1:30 most rooms on this list have closed. A few small clubs operate later (Envy in Kacyiru Sud, the occasional pop-up venue) but the offering is thin and the experience inconsistent.
If you're staying out very late, the practical move is to be settled into one bar by midnight rather than venue-hopping. The bar-restaurants on this list will let you stay past last call if you've been there a while; new arrivals at 1am often get turned away.
Late pharmacies and medical
The 24-hour pharmacy question comes up most often from visitors used to Western city expectations. The short answer:
- Pharmacie de Garde rotation. Kigali pharmacies take turns being on overnight duty. The rotation is published weekly; any open pharmacy can tell you who's on duty tonight.
- 24/7 hospital pharmacies. King Faisal Hospital, CHUK, and the Rwanda Military Hospital all have pharmacies attached to their A&E departments — the most reliable overnight medication source.
- Petrol-station mini-marts. Larger 24-hour Engen and SP stations stock basic medications (paracetamol, antacids, ibuprofen). Useful in a pinch, limited inventory.

Late-night food beyond restaurants
- Brochette stands. The Kigali street-food default. Skewered grilled meat with sambusa or chips, served from 6pm until well past midnight. The Nyamirambo and Remera strips have the most options.
- 24-hour petrol-station mini-marts. Snacks, drinks, basic groceries. SP Nyarutarama and Engen Kacyiru run reliable overnight services.
- Yego and Uber food delivery runs late at most of our top restaurants — but kitchens stop accepting orders 30-60 min before the listed close. Order by 10pm to be safe.
Practical things
- Friday and Saturday are the late nights. Weeknight late-evening is much quieter. If you want the actual Kigali after-dark, those two days.
- Getting home. Yego, Uber, and moto-taxis all run past closing. Late-night fares 20-40% above daytime rates but reliable.
- Safety. Kigali at night is among the safest cities in Africa to walk in. That doesn't mean you should walk a kilometre alone at 2am — but the cross-the-street-to-find-a-taxi paranoia of bigger cities isn't necessary.
