Akagera National Park — safari planning 2026

Africa's only Big Five park in Rwanda, the eastern-savanna alternative to Volcanoes' rainforest, and the practical 2026 safari-planning guide — game drives, boat safaris, where to stay, what to expect, what to bring.

Akagera National Park is Rwanda's only Big Five park — lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffalo — restored over the past 15 years by a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. It's a different Rwanda experience entirely from Volcanoes' gorilla trekking: open savanna, dramatic lakeshore, classic African safari at a meaningfully more accessible price point than the equivalent Kenyan or Tanzanian experience. This is the 2026 safari-planning guide.

What you'll see

  • Lions — Reintroduced 2015. ~30 lions across multiple prides. Sightings increasingly common.
  • Leopards — Resident but elusive. Sightings less common; lucky to see one.
  • Elephants — Several hundred across the park. Standard sightings.
  • Rhinos — Eastern black rhinos reintroduced from South Africa and Europe. ~50+ rhinos. Sightings on game drives possible but not guaranteed.
  • Cape buffalo — Common across the park.
  • Other notable species: Giraffe (reintroduced; ~80+), zebra, hippopotamus (large populations in the lakes), Nile crocodile, baboons, vervet monkeys, multiple antelope species (topi, impala, oribi), spotted hyena, side-striped jackal.
  • Birds: 500+ species. The shoebill stork is a flagship sighting in the wetlands.

Getting to Akagera

  • From Kigali: 2.5-3 hours by car. Paved highway most of the way; final 30 km is unpaved but well-maintained.
  • Park gate: Akagera South Gate (Kayonza, ~125 km from Kigali) or Mutumba Gate (~140 km, less-used).
  • Transport: Hire a car-and-driver (USD 80-150 per day) or use a tour operator package (USD 250-600 per day for a 2WD/4WD with guide).
  • Self-drive: Possible in a 4WD; the park sells day-permits at the gate.

Park fees and permits — 2026

  • Park entry (non-resident, per day): USD 100 per person
  • Resident or East African Community citizen: USD 50 per person
  • Guided game drive vehicle (RDB): USD 40-60 per vehicle per drive
  • Boat safari (Lake Ihema): USD 35-50 per person
  • Night game drive: USD 50 per person (3-hour evening drive)
  • Behind-the-scenes rhino tracking: USD 100-150 per person (premium experience)

Where to stay

Inside the park

  • Magashi Camp (Wilderness). USD 1,500-2,800 per night, all-inclusive. Premium safari camp on Lake Rwanyakizinga. Honeymoon-grade.
  • Ruzizi Tented Lodge (African Parks). USD 350-700 per night. The community-and-conservation-focused mid-luxury option. Tented but real beds.
  • Karenge Bush Camp. USD 300-500 per night. Smaller, more rustic; closer to game.

Near the park (more budget-friendly)

  • Akagera Game Lodge. USD 150-300 per night. Hilltop position with park views.
  • Akagera Bird Lodge. USD 80-150 per night. Smaller, near the park entrance.
  • Day trip from Kigali. Possible but tight — 3 hours each way leaves limited game-driving time. Better as 1-night minimum.

Two-day Akagera safari itinerary

  1. Day 1 — morning departure. Leave Kigali 6 AM. Arrive Akagera 9 AM. Mid-morning game drive (best sightings at 6-10 AM and 4-7 PM). Lunch at lodge. Afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema (hippos, crocodiles, water birds). Evening game drive or sundowner. Overnight at park lodge.
  2. Day 2 — full morning game drive. Pre-dawn departure from lodge (5:30 AM). Long morning drive — northern plains (lion territory), rhino circuit if doing the behind-the-scenes experience. Late breakfast. Mid-morning departure for Kigali. Arrive Kigali early-afternoon.

Three-day Akagera safari itinerary (luxury)

  • Day 1: Same as Day 1 above.
  • Day 2: Two full game drives (morning + afternoon). Boat safari. Behind-the-scenes rhino tracking experience.
  • Day 3: Final morning drive. Late breakfast. Return to Kigali.

What to pack for Akagera

  • Neutral-colour clothing (khaki, olive, beige) for game drives. Bright colours can attract attention.
  • Wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen — Akagera is open savanna at lower altitude; sun is sharper than Kigali.
  • Binoculars — even basic ones improve the experience meaningfully.
  • Camera with zoom lens — wildlife is often 30-100m away. A 200-400mm zoom helps.
  • Light layers — early-morning game drives are cool (15-20°C); midday warmer (25-28°C).
  • Antimalarial prophylaxis — Akagera is lower altitude than Kigali; malaria risk is real.
  • Insect repellent with DEET for evenings.
  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes for the walking-circuit portions of guided drives.

Best months for safari

Dry seasons concentrate animals around water sources, improving sighting odds dramatically. June-September is the prime safari window; December-February also strong. April-May (wet) makes some park roads difficult and game more dispersed — still good but more demanding.

Cost summary — typical 2-day Akagera trip

  • Park fees (2 days entry): USD 200 per person
  • Guided game drive vehicle (2 drives): USD 80-120
  • Boat safari: USD 35-50
  • Mid-luxury lodge (1 night): USD 350-700
  • Transport from Kigali (car + driver): USD 160-240
  • Meals not at lodge: USD 30-60
  • Tipping (guide, lodge staff): USD 30-50
  • Total per person, mid-tier: USD 700-1,400
